Bernède is in the Departement du Gers in South West France. It is a rural area with many small villages and a good number of market towns. In case of doubt as to its attractions the Romans spent many hundreds of years here – possibly something to do with the fact that vines grow well.

Situated about equidistant from Bordeaux, Toulouse and Biarritz it is in the heart of Gascony. This historic region was arguably the first English colony from about 1050AD to 1453AD when it returned to French rule.

The area is known for a number of wine "appellation" including St Mont, Madiran  and Pacherenc.

There are no shops in Bernède - not even a boulangerie. The nearest town is Aire sur L'Adour which is 8km away and has all services including several large supermarkets and a hospital with 24 hour A&E.  Many shops close for lunch although the major supermarkets are now open. Monday is closing day for most shops again excepting supermarkets, boulangerie , tabac and fleuriste.  These last are also open Sunday morning but nothing in the afternoon.

Local bus services do not exist unless you are going to school. There are few taxis and one can certainly not flag one down. Details of the taxi firms are in the taxis section.
